One day, long enough ago (September 8, 1966), Peter Andrew Furler was born. He entered the world in McLaren Vale Hospital, South Australia, Australia. His parents were missionaries with one other child. Today the family numbers eight, with four kids after Pete. When he was about ten years old, Pete started playing the drums. Sometimes he'd play in the church, and that was just okay. Yet he in no way had planned on becoming involved in the ministry! In fact, he wondered why his father did what he did. In his highschool years, Peter was basically one of those kids who walked around with a boom box on his shoulder. He remembers listening to the radio and hearing the first chord of a song and knowing right away what song it was and which artist it was by. He drove his siblings insane throughout his entire youth with his banging on anything- the back seat of the car, his lap, anything! At fifteen, he formed a band tentatively titled "The News" (himself as the drummer, his friend John James as the frontman), and played his first gig at his sister's 16th birthday party. Pete admits that when they first started, they were really bad. Be that as it may, God 'hijacked' that band! The Newsboys (name changed) began to play anywhere they could. Sometimes they would pile into a van with all their musical equipment and drive to the beach, and just play for anyone that would listen. Other times, they'd go into pubs and play. The Aussie crowds were an honest bunch, and if they didn't like you, they'd let you know it. If you're playing "onstage," you might have to be wary of an occasional flying beer-bottle. In the late/middle 80's, a band called WhiteHeart came to Australia. They were not well-known to Australia, so they asked the Newsboys, who had become a loved icon, to open for them. Soon, the 'boys crossed paths with Wes Campbell, who had promoted different bands in the area before. These were always given a choice between good sound equipment and Hungry Jack's (Burger King) for dinner afterwards, or mediocre equipment, with the whole nine yards of a great sort of dinner afterwards. The newsboys were the first band to ever choose the King. Wes Campbell saw something different in these boys. They were going places. What's more, is they actually cared about their fans, and they wanted to give people a good show. Wes picked up his house and home, and the little band of newsboys and took them to America. Peter now lives in Franklin, Tennessee. Though he may not have to worry about flying beer bottles, he keeps a good distance from disco balls after an 'incident' on his LoveLibertyDisco 2000 Airdome tour. He is married to Summer LeFevre Furler (daughter of Mylon LeFevre) whom he met at a Bible study in Atlanta, Georgia and proposed to all on a spurr of the moment. It was cute because he gave her flowers and a stuffed animal kangaroo. He coulnd't stop staring at summer (how cute!) Twelve years, 11 albums, and about 20 members later, Peter's belief in the idea of "giving the crowds more than what they paid for" manifests itself with each tour. He's great in concert.
