Like Phil, Jeff was adopted. His parents are John and Sandy, his sister is Becky. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Jeff, no different from the rest of the newsboys, now lives in Franklin, TN. When Jeff was a kid, he lived just down the road from his grandparents, who owned an old Wurlitzer organ. His grandfather spotted Jeff's passion for music at an early age, and would let him come in and "jam" on the organ for hours at a time, occasionally playing with him - "just for fun." Jeff's mom on the other hand, made sure that he had lessons in piano. I think he had mixed feelings about that: he loved playing music, but piano was a little dorky - for girls, right? Okay so that's obviously not true, but boys will be boys. During his high school years, Jeff would listen to the radio late in the night to see what type of music they were playing. He used this time to think and revel. After he graduated, he met Peter at a Newsboys show - and they really hit it off talking about a keyboard that they had both just bought. Peter wrote Jeff's phone number down...just in case. You never know A year later, Jeff's mom said to him "Some guy with a funny accent called for you." Wow, now that's organization. Imagine hanging onto some guy's phone number that you barely know for an entire year.As it turns out, the Newsboys were in need of a new keyboardist. Jeff didn't even know any of the Newsboys' music, but they suggested that he just 'test it out' during the soundcheck. He did that. Then they suggested "Why don't you play for the show night?" He did that too. And he was too scared to move anything other than his fingers. Now ladies and gentlemen, does that sound like our Jeff? Umm no, our Jeff is a maniac. Ahh, the newsboys' typical "trial by fire" could tax the confidence of anyone. Yet maniac or not, he was asked to join the Newsboys. He dropped out of college, borrowed a newsboy CD from a friend, and spent three tortured days in the basement of his house trying to cram his head full of newsboy music before hitting the road on his first tour. His old private Christian High School took down his graduation photo, denouncing their former student for joining a rock band. When he first started, he was "really young and really green," Jody comments with a laugh. "We used to torment him unmercifully; he'd hold the curtains to his bunk shut for an hour before he went to sleep, because there was no telling what was going to happen. He spent those first few months scared to death." But being with the newsboys is enough to stretch anyone - and soon Jeff was playing tricks along with the rest of them.
